Born in Bristol in 1958, John was educated at Bristol Grammar School and Oriel College, Oxford. He trained for ordination at Westcott House, Cambridge. He was Assistant Curate of St Andrew's, Taunton, in Somerset and then Chaplain of Trowbridge College and Assistant Priest of St John's, Studley in Wiltshire.

John became Vicar of Holy Trinity , Yeovil in January 1990 and Rector of the united benefice of Yeovil Holy Trinity with Barwick in 1995. In November 1998 the new Holy Trinity Church & Community Centre was opened. He became honorary chaplain to GKN Westland in 1999. In October 2000 he was elected to General Synod. He spent the first quarter of 2001 on long study leave, including nine weeks at Tantur Ecumenical Institute between Jerusalem and Bethlehem.

In July 2002 he became Vicar of Sprowston with Beeston St Andrew, near Norwich.

In October 2005 he was also appointed Rural Dean of Norwich North

He is married to Mary. They have three children Alice, Joseph and Eleanor.
